BREAKING NEWS: Blumenthal Uses Former Right-Wing Foes To Attack Obama

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-drei er/sidney-blumenthal-uses-fo_b_99695.htm lSidney

Former journalist Sidney Blumenthal has been widely credited with coining the term "vast right-wing conspiracy" used by Hillary Clinton in 1998 to describe the alliance of conservative media, think tanks, and political operatives that sought to destroy the Clinton White House where he worked as a high-level aide. A decade later, and now acting as a senior campaign advisor to Senator Clinton, Blumenthal is exploiting that same right-wing network to attack and discredit Barack Obama. And he's not hesitating to use the same sort of guilt-by-association tactics that have been the hallmark of the political right dating back to the McCarthy era.

Almost every day over the past six months, I have been the recipient of an email that attacks Obama's character, political views, electability, and real or manufactured associations. The original source of many of these hit pieces are virulent and sometimes extreme right-wing websites, bloggers, and publications. But they aren't being emailed out from some fringe right-wing group that somehow managed to get my email address. Instead, it is Sidney Blumenthal who, on a regular basis, methodically dispatches these email mudballs to an influential list of opinion shapers -- including journalists, former Clinton administration officials, academics, policy entrepreneurs, and think tankers -- in what is an obvious attempt to create an echo chamber that reverberates among talk shows, columnists, and Democratic Party funders and activists. One of the recipients of the Blumenthal email blast, himself a Clinton supporter, forwards the material to me and perhaps to others.

These attacks sent out by Blumenthal, long known for his fierce and combative loyalty to the Clintons, draw on a wide variety of sources to spread his Obama-bashing. Some of the pieces are culled from the mainstream media and include some reasoned swipes at Obama's policy and political positions.

But, rather remarkably for such a self-professed liberal operative like Blumenthal, a staggering number of the anti-Obama attacks he circulates derive from highly-ideological and militant right-wing sources such as the misnamed Accuracy in Media (AIM), The Weekly Standard, City Journal, The American Conservative, and The National Review.

Simple (2.00 / 1)

A troll is someone who is intellectually dishonest.

Since the title of this diary is a lie, the diarist clearly fits the definition.

Not the whole article (none / 0)

You only posted the first 3 paragraphs.

Now you will have a million people slamming you for an article with no evidence.

Brother, dont worry I went there, and I agree, a very long article.

Anyways, unfortunately the only an affair with Karl Rove would convince anyone on this site or the media that she has gone too far.

Re: HRC joins the VRWC (none / 0)

She should send out daily talking points.

Her campaign should not aid or give notoriety to right wing nut jobs to substantiate her talking points.

Without Spin (2.00 / 1)

Can someone break this article down.

I wish the author would get to the point, I keep reading it and do not see a smoking gun.

Am I missing it?

Re: Without Spin (none / 0)

Senior aide to Clinton campaign sends out daily e-mails parroting right-wing web sites to support attacks on Obama.  Members of the MSM, who are on aide's e-mail list, adopt right-wing nut-job talking points.

I skimmed parts of it and that's what I got.

Re: Without Spin (none / 0)

Okay, I picked those facts reading it too.

Was this a covert effort, is this something that was public for a while?

I need Sam Stein or Cliff Schecter to revise that article, maybe Im just over worked and tired (well I am).

Facts are fair game (2.00 / 0)

Oh please--Obama supporters are afraid of learning more about their guy.  The Republicans are all over this and they use some really dumb stuff (middle name, flag pin, etc.), but the facts are FAIR GAME for any Hillary supporter to discuss.  Those are what are used.

by The Smoldering Crone on Thu May 01, 2008 at 07:27:27 PM EST

An old saying (none / 0)

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Obama needs to be vetted and fortunately, some of that is finally being done. There's so much more not to like about this guy, the Wright thing is really tame by comparison.

HOORAY FOR SIDNEY!

;)

Re: HRC joins the VRWC (none / 0)

Here's the problem with the Sidney piece. This is the type of stuff that upsets, angers, the supers, gets them moving to Obama or switching to Obama as Andrews did today for these very reasons. Now throw in WVWV, I know no real connection to campaign, but it just looks bad again to the Supers. Folks it is no longer about the vote it's about the Super Delegates. The  more she looks like all she cares about is winning and damn the party the less and less chance she has of pulling this off.

Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.
by jsfox on Thu May 01, 2008 at 08:06:18 PM EST

I think what should move the Supers (none / 0)

is whether or not Hillary is a stronger candidate against McCain or whether Obama is the stronger candidate.  If you look at the polls up on the two upper corners of MyDD, you will note that Hillary is, hands down, the winner and the only one of the two who can defeat McCain in November.  That is what Super Delegates care about.

Re: HRC joins the VRWC (none / 0)

IF Sidney B. gets some of his quotes or info for that matter from right wing sources, what's the problem as long as the data can be held up to scrutiny?

Re: HRC joins the VRWC (none / 0)

?? I'm confused.  Are you implying that the Voters needs help to know that Obama is not good a choice for President???

by SHIBAM8P on Thu May 01, 2008 at 10:48:33 PM EST

Facts are facts. (none / 0)

It doesn't matter where facts come from, if they are FACTS then they should be used in this campaign.  Obama has been totally vacuuous in this campaign and any fact that can be uncovered about him needs to be shared with the electorate because Obama has certainly been secretive about his work, friends, connections, etc.  And now he doesn't even know what his pastor believes even though he has attended church on a regular basis for twenty years.  It is like trying to see and understand a ghost.  Thank you Sydney for any light you can shine on this poser.
